Heat Treatment for Bed Bugs:

What Do I need to Do To Prepare?

In order for Baked Bed Bugz LLC to provide the best possible service we ask that you make a few simple preparations before we arrive. The preparations that we request are minimal, but they are crucial to the success of the program. If any cooperation above and beyond what is listed here is required, we will make you aware of this as needed. Please do not take anything with you when you leave the home the day it is treated. If it is not on this list, the heat treatment should not damage the item! Items removed from the structure could result in re-infestation when they are brought back in. If you have any specific concerns on an individual item, please contact your management office so that they can forward any questions to us in a time efficient manner.

TO PREPARE FOR SERVICE
ALL ITEMS WITHIN 2 FEET OF THE BED OR COUCH SHOULD BE LEFT WHERE THEY ARE.
All comforters, items under the bed/couch, around the bed/couch or within 2 feet of the bed/couch should be left where they are. These items have the highest risk of infestation and while performing the heat treatment we need to know where all of the high risk items are. By leaving these items there, we can heat treat them appropriately.

CLUTTER MUST BE DEALT WITH!!! Clutter provides places for bugs to hide that heat may have trouble penetrating. We also need to be able to move and work in the home and excess clutter makes this difficult. If you own excessive items (i.e. furniture) and you know it is difficult to work in your home, please discard of items that can be discarded of and clean the home so that we can work freely. Boxes will be shifted but not opened if left in the treatment area. If your closets are over-packed with items, these items should be organized so that we can heat treat each of them effectively. We will be using High Velocity fans during the treatment which will result in loose, light items to be moved, blown around, or destroyed by the fans. Please put important papers away.

PLEASE TURN OFF AND UNPLUG ANY ELECTRICAL DEVICES THAT HAVE INTERNAL FANS.

ALL PILES OF CLOTHES, LINENS AND OTHER FABRIC ITEMS ARE RECOMMENDED TO BE LAUNDERED ON A HOT WASH AND/OR A LOW TO MEDIUM DRY CYCLE, HOWEVER,(OPTIONAL) A DRY CYCLE MAY BE OK FOR PREVIOUSLY WASHED ITEMS. THIS INCLUDES ITEMS IN DRESSERS, CLOSETS, STORAGE CONTAINER, ETC….

The hot wash and dry cycles will kill any bugs associated with these items and the heat treatment may have trouble penetrating these items. Once the items have been laundered they should be sealed tightly in plastic garbage bags to prevent re-infestation of items prior to the heat treatment and if those sealed bags are inside the unit, they should be kept in front of the area they originated. For example, if the clothes came from the bedroom dresser, the bag should be left in front of that dresser.

ANY CLOTHES THAT ARE HANGING CAN REMAIN HANGING AND ANY CLOTHES THAT CAN BE HUNG SHOULD BE HUNG. Heat penetrates hanging clothes well so all clothes that are hanging should be left hanging and any additional clothes that can be hung should be hung.

PLEASE REMOVE AND LEAVE IN A PLASTIC (recommended) or

CARDBOARD BOX ON THE  KITCHEN TABLE OR DESIGNATED AREA:

AEROSOL CANS

FLAMMABLE ITEMS

SOAPS

CANDLES OR ANY OTHER ITEMS MADE OF WAX

COSMETICS, DEODORANT STICKS, ETC…

ANY CORKED BOTTLES, SUCH AS WINE

ANY DRUGS OR ANTIBIOTICS

AMMUNITION

STUFFED ANIMALS WITH LIGHT WEIGHT FOAM STUFFING

OR ANYTHING YOU FEEL MY MELT OR BE DAMAGED. PLEASE MARK FOR INSPECTION. WE WILL TAKE A QUICK LOOK TO SEE IF YOU LEFT SOMETHING BUT WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR REMOVING ITEMS.

PLEASE make sure these items are removed prior to heat treatment. We would be happy to inspect these items for the presence of bugs prior to their removal but we are not furniture movers.

IMPROPERLY INSTALLED PVC BLINDS MAY NEED TO BE REMOVED BECAUSE THE WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION MAY CAUSE THEM TO SAG. Please draw them tight, tape ends and leave them in the affected area for treatment.

Plants will be affected by the heat. Use your best judgement on saving any plants in the treatment area.

MOST IMPORTANTLY!!!!!!!

Anything that can be left in the home should be left in the home. Understand that anything you take from the house could have bed bugs associated with it. Items with bugs or eggs that are taken with will re-introduce bugs when you return. . Our goal is to eliminate every bug possible but in order to do that we have to try to prevent taking bugs from the home. To do this it is best that you leave the home with nothing but the clothes that you are wearing. Examples of things to consider and suggestions of how to deal with each are:

Children’s backpacks for school: either carry the books for the day or use a makeshift bag for one day

Purses: take all items that are necessary for the day but leave the bag behind

Clothing: have a change of clothes ready for your return and change upon entering the home and the clothes you wore all day store in a sealed garbage bag and wash and/or dry on a hot cycle ASAP

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU RETURN

Remember that your home was heated up to 135oF (57oC) for the treatment of bed bugs. We will open windows and attempt to air out the home as best we can prior to your arrival. Even with our attempts to air out your home, it may be warm when you arrive. Use discretion before entering.

We are going to be moving items around to optimize the effect of heat during our treatment. When you return all of the items in your home may not be where they were when you left home. You can move the items and put items away when you arrive home.

Some of your items will be in contractor’s bags. These items should be washed and dried before use.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP

If you see any live bed bugs in the home please report them immediately to your management office or to Baked Bed Bugz. If bed bugs were not killed by the heat treatment, the sooner we get in to treat your home the quicker the problem will be eliminated.

Take steps to prevent the re-introduction of bed bugs. Educate yourself about bed bugs so you can avoid re-introducing them into your home. A few examples include, not bringing used or second hand items into your home, exercising care when traveling or having overnight guests.
